This week Dr. Wylie Carr, a social scientist with the US Fish and Wildlife Service in Atlanta, will be talking on "Social science within the US Fish and Wildlife Service: an experiment in working with introverts."  

Dr. Carr’s job as the new Region 4 social scientist is to help understand and address the human side of the Service’s work. He’ll be involved in big picture efforts like the Southeast Conservation Adaptation Strategy (SECAS), as well as more local efforts like examining public preferences for species or refuge management.

Warnell Seminar November 8

This week Dr. Mark Ruder will be talking about "Hemorrhagic disease of deer: what have we learned?" 

Dr. Ruder is an Assistant Research Scientist at the Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study where he helps coordinate various wildlife health-related service and research activities that are central to the cooperative structure of SCWDS. Dr. Ruder's research focuses on multiple aspects of hemorrhagic disease of deer and other vector-borne diseases of wildlife.

Tree Planting Volunteer Opportunity October 15:
On October 15, we will be planting trees at the Blue Heron Nature Preserve as part of a city-wide effort to care for local trees.Only twenty minutes away from downtown Atlanta, the Blue Heron Nature Preserve boasts almost 30 acres of preserved and restored wetlands. This greenspace provides essential habitats for local biodiversity while also cleaning polluted stormwater before it enters our local creeks and streams.  Because of the abundance of food and shelter this wetland provides, guests are likely to see a variety of beavers, birds and butterflies.Help us care for this local treasure by coming out to plant trees at the Preserve. Volunteers should wear waterproof closed-toed shoes or boots, clothes that can get dirty, sunscreen and bug spray as needed.  We’ll be working in muddy areas, so please wear old/outdoor work clothes. Meet at the community garden at 8:45 for a lesson on tree planting and basic tree care. We will finish at noon. This event is being hosted in partnership with Trees Atlanta as a part of a larger event called Plantlanta, that includes planting in all 12 Atlanta city council districts in one day! Also the Preserve’s Open House, volunteers will get a chance to learn more about important efforts, such as how they are working to increasing native tree species diversity and replacing some recently lost trees.
Difficulty Level: Moderate
Age Restrictions: 16 and up (under 18 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian)
Supplies Needed: Water, long sleeve work shirt, long pants, closed shoes (clothes you don’t mind getting wet)
Restrooms: There are no restrooms readily available at this clean-up.
BYO picnic, gloves, water.

JAGS - WGSA Workshop Series

UPDATE: Here is the PowerPoint presentation from this workshop for your reference.

The next WGSA Workshop will be help on Wednesday (2/11) at 4:00 in the Dean's Conference Room. Paige Howell will lead us in an introduction to JAGS, a Bayesian software program. Please see a more detailed description below, and we hope you can join us!

Crash course in using JAGS through the R interface. Participants should have R (http://www.r-project.org/) installed on their computer as well as the rjags package and JAGS (http://mcmc-jags.sourceforge.net/) before coming. The workshop will briefly cover the basics of Bayesian inference using Markov Chain Monte Carlo simulation. Participants will have a chance to work through an exercise building a model with the JAGS language and executing their script in R. Past experience with R, maximum likelihood parameter estimation, and generalized linear models is useful but not required.

WGSA Meeting Jan 22 6-8pm

We will be having our first spring 2015 meeting at Trans Met on Thursday January 22nd. We'll be providing pizza and beer, and discussing the upcoming symposium. This is a great opportunity to get involved and contribute to Warnell. The symposium is always a great time to present your research and see what your fellow students are working on. Please plan to attend! We'll be meeting upstairs around 6:00pm. See you then!

Tailgate!

This Saturday, September 27th, UGA will be playing Tennessee, and what better way to prep to cheer on the Bulldogs than to tailgate with the WGSA? We will be setting up outside of Warnell bright and early at 8:00am as it's a noon game. We'll provide some food, non-alcoholic beverages, coolers and ice. BYOB.

GSA Happy Hour

First WGSA meeting of the 2014-2015 academic year!

Fellow Warnellians,

This year’s first, official WGSA Meeting will be held next week on Wednesday, September 3^rd at 6:00pm at Jace Nelson’s house (393 Richard Way). Before complaining about faculty members and data sets, we’ll discuss upcoming events and programs, the new website, and cool swag. Tasty, Georgia bbq and frosty beers will be provided. However, remember that WGSA offers much more than a free meal… Want to improve your resume with volunteer activities?  WGSA!  Need advice on which professors make good committee members?  WGSA! Is there an intruder in your house at this very moment?  Forget WGSA, get out of the house and call the police!

We look forward to sharing some hot pizza and cold beer with all of you at the Graduate Student Reception tonight (a.k.a. “Ring of Fire”) at Flinchum’s Phoenix in Whitehall (doors open at 5:30).

Ring of Fire

The Warnell graduate student orientation social is tonight, August 28th, at Flinchum's Phoenix at Whitehall. The doors open at 5:30 and the social begins at 6:00. There will be pizza and beer, as well as great opportunities to meet fellow grad students and Warnell faculty. Please plan to attend, and we looking forward to meeting new folks, and caching up with returning students!
